Severe Weather Information

Lightning & Severe Weather
As the majority of soccer is played outdoors, lightning and severe weather pose a threat to player health and safety. US Soccer’s Recognize to Recover program, provides guidelines for responding quickly and safely when lightning and severe weather threaten practice or a game. When it comes to making decisions to suspend or cancel play due to weather condition, coaches, officials and administrators all share responsibility. These same individuals should be aware of close safe shelter locations and know how to evaluate when it is safe to resume play after severe weather leaves an area.

Environmental Conditions
Environmental conditions can significantly impact player health and safety. Extreme temperatures, severe weather and the integrity of the playing field and its equipment all impact players’ ability to practice and compete safely. US Soccer’s Recognize to Recover program gives players, parents, coaches and referees information and guidelines to make sure the desire to play does not cloud the decision-making process when it comes to evaluating environmental conditions to ensure the safety of those on the field.

Severe Weather Update - Oct 15, 2016 (9:00am)

Updated notification of game closures for this weekend. We are trying to communicate as situations are confirmed.

  • All U06/U07 (Master Coaching) games are CANCELED for this weekend
  • All HSA association games U08 - U11 are CANCELED for this weekend
  • Rec Cup - All games schedule for this weekend will be postponed to October 29 and 30 or November 5 and 6
  • SSUL (home games) - play as scheduled - please see note below for details

Re-Schedules

  • For our U06/U07 games, we may extend the season one week, since it is an 8 week season and we have room at the end of the season. That will be communicated directly to the U6/U7 families.
  • For U08-U11 HSA games, the season has 10 game weekends and already goes up until the weekend before Thanksgiving. These games will not be re-scheduled.
  • For the Recreational Cup games, they will be re-scheduled to the end of Oct or early Nov. Please watch the Rec Cup schedule for updates.
  • To all SSUL coaches, if you have an away game, there is a chance that your game will be cancelled, since the SSUL is leaving it up to each individual club. Some clubs do not have access to synthetic turf fields, so they may not have a choice if their fields have already been closed. Please be in touch with that coach to work out the re-scheduled date if you are affected. We know that Maple Valley teams will not be hosting or traveling to away games planned for this weekend, but please contact your coaching counterparts regardless to confirm.

For those playing at home this weekend, please make sure the goals are secured. If they are no sandbags, place something heavy on the backs of the goals, even if you need to use all of your players' bags.

If there is a concern about player safety when you get to the field, please confer with the referee and the other coach and make a decision on whether to play or not at game time.

Stay safe this weekend!
